Chapter 9

By that evening Samantha was still feeling just as frustrated. She popped open the last box of Chinese food and set it in the middle of the table. Although she loved food, she preferred, and was better at, eating it than cooking it. So she placed an order and had it delivered. A knock on the front door signaled that her friends had begun to arrive.

“Come on in, I’m in the dining room.” Samantha tossed some forks on the table and one pair of chopsticks for Jo.

“Hi Samantha.” Walt stepped in and sniffed the air. “Ah, A-1 Wok’s?” He smiled.

“Yes, I never go anywhere else.” She grinned as he headed straight for the table. “Don’t worry I got you your favorite, vegetables.”

“Thank you! You’re so thoughtful.” Walt sighed with contentment as he settled at the table. The next knock on the door was easy to recognize. It was heavy, two quick solid raps.

“Come on in, Eddy!” She grabbed glasses from the cabinets and iced tea from the refrigerator.

As the front door swung open, Eddy’s voice preceded him, as well as his tone. It was sharp, determined, and impatient.

“You keep wanting to dismiss the possibility that Rose was a genuine tea leaf reader, but I think it’s an angle that we have to focus on. If we ignore it, then we might just miss out on some very important information.”

Jo stepped in behind him and rolled her eyes when she knew that he wasn’t looking in her direction. “Because, Eddy it’s nearly impossible. You want to believe that she really saw something in that reading, but the truth is it was most likely a scam. If you fall for it, then it’ll throw off our entire investigation.”

“Hey, I’m not falling for anything,” he snapped, then sighed. “Forget it, we can revisit it later.”

“Well, Jo and I overheard some important information when we were at the coffee shop.” Samantha gestured for them all to sit down at the table. “According to the owner of Sleep Here Inn where Rose was staying, she didn’t give him any ID or credit card.”

“Interesting.” Eddy raised an eyebrow and sat forward in his chair. “I wonder what that will lead to. Did the owner have anything else to say?”

“His theory was that she might be on the run from a disgruntled spouse. I’m thinking that she’s more likely on the run from someone she scammed in the past. She might be quite new to tea leaf reading, but she could have been running a different kind of scam under another name.” Jo tapped her fingertip on the table. “New name, new act.”

“That’s possible.” Walt nodded.

“Sure, it’s possible. But I’m pretty sure I’ve already found the killer.” Eddy’s revelation drew everyone’s attention.

“You have?” Walt looked across the table at him with surprise. “Who?”

“I looked more into Dale, and it turns out he was on trial in the past for the murder of his wife, who choked on rice poured down her throat.” He shook his head. “Sound familiar?”

“Oh, how strange.
